SEVEN

Penelope

I stretched out on the lumpy couch in front of the fireplace, propping my feet on Trevor and using him as a pillow. My crystal slippers had rubbed blisters across my ankles after countless nights spent dancing at the winery. Vail and I had danced from midnight to dawn three times this past week until I finally declared I needed a break. Every part of my overspent body ached.

I held my wrist up, turning it in the firelight and inspecting the blue shadow that veiled two tiny blood marks. Vail had fed from me twice. The first time, I stubbornly pushed him to bite me. But the second time, he didn’t even ask. I jumped into his arms and pressed my wrist to his lips the moment he told me Theo RSVP’d to the investor ball. He smirked before baring his fangs and digging in. Knowing he could release his toxin in me at any moment sent an exhilarating rush of danger from my head, straight down to my royal flower.

Being the gentleman he was, Vail stopped himself before becoming carried away but not before I saw his bulge below the belt. The longer he held my wrist to his lips, the longer his magic wand grew under his slacks. I’d thought back to the dark curse I’d placed on Theo long ago after I first left the kingdom. I had come across a spell to grow his nose hairs faster than he could keep up with them.

I wondered, If I can make nose hairs grow like weeds, what else can I charm to become bigger?

I threw my head back and laughed, startling Otto, who was lying on the floor beneath me, snoozing a whistling sound from his nose. He popped his head over the edge of my frayed, lumpy couch and growled.

“Lie back down. It’s just me.” I waved him away and took another sip of wine before reaching over and pouring the rest in Grump’s bowl.

I hadn’t planned on bringing the old goat home from the winery, but after I’d met him the first night, he had come back the next night to see me too. With each twirl, spin, or dip at Vail’s hand, Grump would provide drunken commentary. After the goat had given my dismount from the chandelier a score of ten and praised my tango skills in between hiccups, I’d let the pathetic beast follow me home. Grump was the opposite of Mirror Mirror, and I could use a lot more encouragement in my life.

I slammed my spell book shut and set it aside. Rain pelted against the windows of the cottage all day and all night, keeping me holed up inside instead of outside, dancing among the falling leaves. Godmother had made me rest anyway.

Yesterday, I’d revisited Fritzi. I’d been minding my own business, practicing my singing in Mirror Mirror, much to his dismay, when I poofed out of my room and back into the diner. It was just after lunch when I felt the familiar zaps pulling me toward the other realm.
